Week 5 at the Soup Kitchen. Phoebe was happy to wait outside while 40+ people enjoyed this week’s gourmet soups. Spring has certainly arrived in Port Navas, and an Easter tree in the hall strikes a seasonal note.

This is week 4 of the Soup Kitchen in the Village Hall and word is spreading about the gourmet soups always on offer. This week very young and not so young enjoyed carrot and coconut, lentil and homity.

The hall was full to capacity today when for the first time we ran a Soup Kitchen. There were homemade soups on offer, all served with crusty bread. The rain did not stop customers from coming to sample carrot and coriander, cauliflower and cheddar cheese or leek and watercress soups. Pat Cross was the head chef and maître D’ for this week. Next week there will be different soups, so do come along on Wednesday 29th February at 12.30.

Port Navas Methodist Chapel

On Christmas morning a cheerful congregation of about thirty people were saddened to hear that the 2011 Christmas service would most likely be the last one celebrated in Port Navas Methodist Chapel. The regular congregation has slowly dwindled in numbers and the building is becoming more and more difficult to maintain.

Despite the sad announcement the service proceeded with much good humour and enthusiastic singing. In the congregation were local residents accompanied by family visitors spanning the generations. We were reminded that 2011 was the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible and listened to the familiar reading from St Luke in which the Birth of Christ is told.

Our little Chapel celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1994, and at that time it was reported that it “is crowded on the various annual festivals”. Unfortunately this is no longer the case and its future is now uncertain.

PNYC Bar and Restaurant to close

Members of the Port Navas Yacht Club have received news that the bar and restaurant is to close. Apparently a victim of the economic times, the club will continue to offer moorings and pontoon spaces. The ‘last supper’ will be on March 30th. Visit pnyc.co.uk for more news.

Christmas Coffee Morning

The coffee morning at the Village Hall was a most enjoyable event on Saturday 26th November with village residents, young and old, and visitors from further afield, meeting up to enjoy hot mince pies, coffee and a bountiful raffle. Helpers from the committee decorated the hall with Christmas greenery and outside the Christmas tree was resplendent.
